BARNEGAT — A man who offered a young girl wine coolers and candy in exchange for allowing him to touch her was rebuffed when police say the girl instead told her mother about the encounter.

Police arrested Jesse Christiansen, 35, on charges of attempted sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child stemming from the incident on Sept. 13.

The mother of the 11-year-old girl alerted the Ocean County Sheriff's Department, which assisted in the investigation along with the local police department and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Christiansen is being held on an outstanding warrant for shoplifting.
