LAKEHURST (AP) — Authorities say a man suffered serious leg and rib injuries when he fell on some railroad tracks behind an Ocean County post office.

Lakehurst police tell the Asbury Park Press that the accident occurred around 9:45 p.m. Saturday, when 18-year-old borough resident Matthew Nyhammer was returning from a track meet at a nearby high school.

Nyhammer was taking a short cut through the woods, using the train tracks, when he sprinted to catch up with some friends. But he soon fell and injured himself.

Group members were able to call a relative who lived nearby. The relative and a Lakehurst police officer soon found Nyhammer and directed emergency responders to his location.

Nyhammer's injuries were not considered life-threatening, but further details on his condition were not disclosed.
