Man in custody in killing of Paterson high school basketball player
PATERSON (AP) — Police have made an arrest in a drive-by shooting that killed a rising high school basketball player and wounded three others.
Authorities said Monday night that 20-year-old Gregory Oliver is charged with murder, attempted murder and weapons possession in connection with the shooting that killed Armoni Sexton. The 15-year-old was a top scorer and rebounder on the varsity team at the Paterson Charter School for Science for Science and Technology.
Word of the arrest was made at a remembrance meeting at Paterson's Eastside Hgh School by the city’s police director, Jerry Speziale. “The person that did it is in jail," he told the emotional crowd according to The Record.
Officials did not say whether Sexton was the target of the shooting.
Authorities say the shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. They say the victims were standing near a liquor store when a burst of gunfire came from a vehicle that quickly fled the scene.
It's unclear if Oliver had an attorney who could comment on the charges.
