ELIZABETH — A stand off with a man holding a 6-year-old boy hostage in a housing complex that continued on Sunday afternoon has ended.

Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage in a tweet just before 3 p.m. said the situation had been "resolved by the Elizabeth Police hostage negotiators and members of the community cooperation."

Bollwage told New Jersey 101.5 it was resolved peacefully at about 1:20 p.m. after the suspect began talking to the negotiators. "That conversation lasted about 45 minutes at which time he allowed entry. The suspect was taken into custody and the 6-year-old boy was in good condition," Bollwage said, adding that the boy will be examined at a hospital and returned to his mother.

"There was no weapons found when he was arrested and no weapon was visible," Bollwage said. A through search will be conducted of the apartment at the Mravlag Manor public housing complex on Maple Avenue which had been was cordoned off.

Bollwage said the situation, which began around 9 a.m., started as a domestic violence case but he did not offer further detail or disclose the identity of anyone involved.

Police were keeping residents away from the building where the situation is taking place. It is one of the 15 buildings in the complex, according to Bollwage.

Witness Fiorella Berrueta tweeted that a woman ran out of one of the apartments and said her partner took her son hostage at gunpoint.

According to the Elizabeth Housing Authority's website Mravlag Manor, located in the city's Bayway section, has 421 apartments in 15 three story buildings and was built in 1940, making it the city's oldest public housing complex.
