EAST BRUNSWICK — A man was in critical condition Saturday evening after his car drove off the side a New Jersey Turnpike overpass, landing on a local road in this township, police said.

The driver, whose identity police did not reveal, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

The single-car crash happened about 3:53 p.m. The Nissan Murano was traveling north on the outer roadway of the Turnpike when it plowed through a guardrail, falling onto Tices Lane, State Police told New Jersey 101.5.

East Brunswick police closed Tices in both directions between Elkins Road and Ryders Lane as the investigation continued into the evening.

Authorities did not know the cause of the accident and a State Police spokesman on Saturday did not know how many feet the car fell.

The guardrails on the Turnpike separate the highway from  a grassy embankment along Tices.
