JERSEY CITY — A 40-year-old man has been charged with DWI in connection with a nine-car crash that took place in Jersey City during Monday's afternoon rush hour, sending six toddlers to the hospital.

Michael Polite, of Newark, was driving a tan SUV at the time of the crash, NJ Advance Media reported. The article states that according to an accident report, Polite was driving on Routes 1&9 near Communipaw Avenue when he rear-ended a black Ford Explorer, causing it to spin out of control and hit a van carrying six toddlers between the ages of 2 and 3 years old, before crashing into a blue Honda Accord.

The article also states that according to police, Polite's SUV jumped the center median, resulting in additional crashes involving five other cars. Jennifer Morrill, a spokesperson for Jersey City, told NJ Advance Media that Polite was charged with driving while intoxicated.

All of the toddlers were treated and released from the hospital, according to the article.
