Tarik Smith, of Newark, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and a weapons offense. His bail was set at $750,000 cash, and he was being held in New York pending extradition to New Jersey.

Authorities say the 26-year-old Smith stole a vehicle early Tuesday from a car rental agency in Newark, and the detective soon located the vehicle in a nearby area. The detective was injured in the ensuing confrontation and fired his weapon at Smith, who drove off and abandoned the car in another part of Newark.

Smith was found Tuesday night at a hospital in Harlem, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound.
