Man Who Barricaded Himself Inside North Jersey Home Surrenders
A man who barricaded himself inside his Mahwah home for most of the day was found naked sitting calmly on the couch of his next door neighbor.
Bergen County Police tweet that the 27-year-old man who has mental health issues drew the attention of neighbors at his Society Hill condo on Tuesday morning. when he taped a gas mask to his door.
Concerned residents at the Society Hill condominium complex had called police around 9:30 a.m. after seeing the gas mask. The man briefly opened his door when police knocked, then closed it and locked it with a deadbolt.
Besides the note and gas mask, police also found a plastic baggie with bullets and a muzzle for a rifle near the front door. They also were concerned he might have hazardous materials in the unit.
The man was found Tuesday afternoon sitting naked on the couch of a neighboring apartment that he apparently broke into. 7 ABC reports the Bergen County SWAT and Hazmat teams are at the home on Juniper Lane.
Mahwah Mayor Bill Laforet wrote on his Facebook page, "Mahwah Police Department, and the Bergen County Swat Team demonstrated today why we are so fortunate to have such highly trained, patient, tactical force when we push send they are on scene in a moments notice."
Laforet wrote that the man was hospitalized for evaluation.
