SOUTH BRUNSWICK — A 29-year-old Georgia man was killed Tuesday night on Route 1 in a collision with a tractor-trailer, police said.

John Jermill Williams of Hampton, Georgia, was driving a 2016 Ford Transit Connect on Raymond Road and was crossing Route 1 when the incident occurred, according to a statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. An investigation determined that Williams was crossing over Route 1 from the Raymond Road jughandle at 9:22 p.m. when his vehicle was struck by a 2005 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Nohemi Farfan, 45, of Baytown, Texas.

According to police, the impact caused the front passenger seat of the Ford to be ejected from the car and onto the roadway. The passenger who was in the seat, a 17-year-old Philadelphia boy, sustained injuries and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He is listed as being in critical condition.

Williams, police said, was taken to University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro for injuries. Authorities say he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:44pm.

During the collision, the tractor trailer to come to rest atop the center divider in the roadway, straddling the northbound and southbound lanes. The truck driver also suffered injuries and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was treated and released, police said.

Following the fatal crash, police shut down Route 1 in both directions from Route 522 to Ridge Road between 9:30 p.m. and 2 a.m. as they conducted an investigation, which authorities say is ongoing.

As of Wednesday, police say no charges have been filed.
