An overnight tractor trailer fire on Route 78 impacted the morning commute with long delays continuing a rough week for drivers who use the road every morning.

New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams said a tractor trailer caught fire around 1 a.m. on the eastbound side just before exit No. 11 for Pattenburg Road in Union Township. The driver was not injured, according to Sgt. Williams, who said the cleanup could continue into the morning drive.

As of 8:51 a.m., two lanes remained closed and significant delays continued as the truck's load of dishwashing soap was offloaded..

New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams suggested getting off at exit No. 3 and taking Route 173 and rejoining Route 78 at exit 11.

"It's been a rough week for Route 78 drivers. There was a tractor trailer accident and another accident earlier in the week plus a tire in the road that caused big backups," Williams said.
