Lyndhurst Man Fatally Stabbed Neighbor, Says Prosecutor

Prosecutors say a 49-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his upstairs neighbor at northern New Jersey apartment building.

Bail was set at $2 million cash for Stephen Baldino of Lyndhurst, who also was charged with hindering apprehension and weapons offenses.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says Baldino stabbed 52-year-old Lydja Mitchell multiple times inside her apartment early Monday after they argued over an unknown matter. Police found Mitchell's body several hours later after another neighbor became concerned when they could not contact Mitchell.

Molinelli says investigators seized "numerous pieces of evidence" inside Baldino's apartment, including clothing and footwear that was soaking in bleach.

It wasn't known Tuesday if Baldino has retained an attorney.
