LONG BRANCH — Police say an on-duty officer was beaten unconscious, found by other cops by the light of his flashlight as he lay on the ground.

Monmouth County Crimestoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information about the incident that leads to the identification and arrest of those involved.

According to Long Branch police, a little before 2 a.m. Tuesday, Officer Michael Monohan was patrolling when he saw several people with flashlights near an abandoned building by Westwood and Bath Avenue, police said.

Monahan exited his vehicle to investigate, and the people fled, police said.

He chased them, catching one, before someone struck him on the back of his head, knocking him out, police said.

Other responding officers couldn't reach him by radio, but finally located him — face down and unconscious — when they saw his flashlight on the ground, police said.

He was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center where he remains under observation for a head injury. Police said they're hopeful for a ful recovery.

"This is another example of the sacrifices that police officers endure daily, putting their lives in danger to protect the public. We are proud of Officer Monahan for his dedication to duty and hope he has a speedy recovery," police said.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Joe Spitale of the Long Branch Police Department at 732-222-1000, or Detective Pam Ricciardi from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. Crime Stoppers can be reached at 1-800-671-4400, and can take anonymous tips.
