It cost $2.1 million to place 2,300 LED lights in the tunnel that links New Jersey with New York.

The Port Authority says the 45-watt lights will reduce electricity use by an estimated 1.2 million kilowatt-hours a year, saving more than $283,000 annually.

The agency says 42 million drivers travel through the Lincoln Tunnel each year.

The Port Authority installed more than 3,000 LED lights in the Holland Tunnel last year, resulting in an annual savings of $250,000.
