‘Lies’ by the Thompson Twins: Doyle’s ‘Not-So-Top-10′ list
As you may already know, the Thompson Twins weren’t actually twins or even a duo.
They were a synthesizer-heavy trio from England. They were named after characters in The Adventures of Tintin and became a big enough act to perform at Live Aid in 1985. The Thompson Twins had three Top-ten hits: “Hold Me Now” (#3 in 1984), “Lay Your Hands on Me” (#6 in ’85), and “King For A Day” (#8 in ’86).
Those were the songs that put them on the map, and I didn’t want to request some obscure follow-up song, so I picked their first hit, “Lies”, which I remember from MTV when I was a youngster. It did make the Top-40, peaking at #30 in 1983.
Alas, my quest to get some airplay for forgotten hits was foiled again as Big Joe ignored my request.
