Late running road work on the Garden State Parkway that caused massive delays for Friday morning commuters can be delayed on waiting for asphalt to dry.

Parkway spokesman Thomas Feeney in an email explained that the contractor was supposed to be done by 6 a.m. and start picking up at #137 (Route 28) in Cranford.  "The road was all torn up at 6 a.m. but they were still waiting on the asphalt to repave it so it couldn't reopen," he wrote.

The Garden State Parkway responded to a tweet from New Jersey 101.5 when all the lanes started to be  reopened around 8 a.m.

The delay in clearing the work closed three of five lanes for northbound drivers causing a 10-mile delay that stretched back to the Driscoll Bridge.

New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams says it took some drivers 90 minutes to get through the delay.

Routes 9 and 35 were also affected by the Parkway slowdown.

Feeney said the Parkway will discuss with the contractor what went wrong sometime during the day on Friday.
