Landmark Cancer Study Underway Nationwide [AUDIO]

Could there be a way to stop cancer once and for all? What if we could pinpoint the exact causes and do whatever we can to prevent it?

The American Cancer Society is embarking on a landmark research study and they continue to seek volunteers for the most ambitious project.

With most cancer research, people who already have the disease are studied. The CPS-3 study is very different because it actually looks at healthy people who are cancer free. Everything from behavior and diet to location and lifestyle will be examined. It gives the medical community a window into the causes and what to look out for.

Roseanne Weber is Regional Vice President of the Jersey Shore Region of the American Cancer Society. She says “so far, we have over 700 shore area residents on board for the study. This is probably one of the most important research projects our organization is undertaking in years. This will hopefully change the face of cancer for future generations.”

To enroll in the study, individuals will go to a local enrollment location and will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form; complete a brief survey, have their waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. The in-person enrollment process takes approximately 20 – 30 minutes to complete. At home, individuals will complete a comprehensive survey packet that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to their health.

Upon completion of this process, the Society will continue to send periodic follow-up surveys to update participant information and annual newsletters with study updates and results. The initial and follow-up surveys completed at home will take an hour or less of time to complete and are expected to be sent every few years.
