An off-duty Lakewood police officer is being called a hero for helping a 80-year-old man who choked on his lunch as a Howell restaurant.

As first reported by the Lakewood Scoop, officer Stephen Meyer successfully applied the Heimlich Maneuver to the man as he choked on his lunch and efforts by the restaurant's manager failed. “It felt great to be able to help someone and that I was in the right place at the right time,” Meyer told the news website.

Heroism runs in the Meyer family as Meyer's uncle Rob, a fellow Lakewood officer, saved a man from choking at a Michigan restaurant 23-years-ago, according to the Scoop.

“It certainly is nice, not only as his father, but that one of our officers sprung into action while off duty and made a difference," Stephen's father, Lakewood police Cap. Gregory Meyer, told the website:
