Thursday's the day. Or not.

The state Senate is set to consider a 23-cent gas tax increase already OK'd by the state Assembly and blessed by Gov. Chris Christie — who got into an insult- and frustration-filled debate with our own Bill Spadea Thursday morning over the plan.

Several state senators say they're reluctant to approve the deal – which would trade a eventual 1 percent break on New Jersey's 7-percent sales tax — but would consider another version. Both the Senate and Assembly will meet Thursday, and a version from either chamber could become law if they can agree.

If it does, the gas tax goes into effect Friday.
