When I was growing up in Union City, it was nothing to have neighbors, friends, and relatives show up at your door unexpectedly.  Kids "called for" their friends, asking if they could come out and play. TV shows always had neighbors dropping in unexpectedly... think Kramer crashing Seinfeld, etc. Now that I'm older with a plan for my day, the last thing I want is unexpected company! In fact, when my boys friends "call for" them, I cringe.

I live in a small town and this past weekend, everybody who was running for anything wanted to knock on my door and make their pitch. Unlike the kids selling whatever, I couldn't just give them money to go away, I had to stay and listen. Regardless of what I was doing or planning to do at the time. I spent more time trying to make up stories of why I had to go than listening to what they had to say. I'm really not sure if knocking on doors is really the way to go as far as winning an election, but I do know if you to come and get my vote, please let me know in advance that you are coming. In fact, that goes for all company.
