Jon Bon Jovi To Watch Signing Of NJ’s Overdose Law

Bruce Springsteen is still Governor Christie's favorite but it will be Jon Bon Jovi who will be on hand when Gov. Chris Christie signs New Jersey's drug overdose prevention bill into law today in Paterson.

The measure shields someone overdosing on drugs and those who get them medical assistance from prosecution if they act in good faith.

The issue hits close to home for Bon Jovi. The rocker's daughter Stephanie Rose apparently overdosed on heroin in a New York college dorm room last year.

“I’m shocked as much as the next parent with this situation and had no idea,” Bon Jovi told People magazine in December.. “Steph is a great kid. Great GPA. Cool school … everything about it is idyllic. She was doing great, then a sudden and steep decline.”

A district attorney dropped drug charges against Stephanie Bongiovi and another student under New York's so-called Good Samaritan 911 law that was designed to reduce overdose deaths by encouraging people to call 911 without fear of being arrested for drug possession.

Christie conditionally vetoed the bill in October and at a town hall in Burlington County explained that he did not agree with the total immunity the bill provided.

“Its a bill that included immunity for anyone who picked up the phone no matter what they did…I don’t think people should be immune from prosecution if they are involved in a drug overdose, " Christie explained. "They call it a good samaritan bill…good samaritan? How about if they’re not a good samaritan? What if they are the person that supplied the drugs? That is my problem with this bill” he added.

The legislature included language in the new bill that provides immunity in most cases according to the Star Ledger. A number of families who lost family members because of a drug overdose urged both sides to compromise.

Christie and Bon Jovi will visit the Turning Point facility at the Barnert Medical Arts Complex before the Governor signs the bill.

It will be the second time in the past week the two have seen each other. They were both invited by the Huffington Post to attend the White House Correspondents Dinner on Saturday.
