The Sparta man arrested for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl at the Beth Israel Worship Center in Wayne was only a congregant, and not an official with the temple,

Charles Card, 30, of Sparta has been charged with two counts of sexual assault for two incidents at the center in 2015, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes.

The center, in a statement on its Facebook page, said Card has not attended services for several months and "was never granted any official or ministerial access to any child."

The center said its officials were made aware of the incident by police and have been working with law enforcement on the case.

"Due to legalities, we're limited in what can be said at this time," the center wrote. "However: At Beth Israel our policy is to always be extremely vigilant with any situation that could remotely touch on any area like this."

The incidents did not take place during a worship service according to NJ Advance Media.

Card is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail and if found guilty could face a maximum of 10 years in prison.
