The NFL’s Black Monday has begun and one of the first on the chopping block is New York Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Jets owner Woody Johnson made the announcement on Monday morning, noting that Rex Ryan will remain the team’s head coach.

“Mike devoted 15 years of service to the Jets, and I want to thank him for his hard work and dedication. Although he helped guide us to two consecutive AFC Championship games, we are not where we want to be, and a new General Manager will be critical to getting this team back on the right track,” Johnson said in a statement released by the team.

Tannenbaum bore the brunt of the blame for the Jets’ extremely generous contract with under-performing starting quarterback Mark Sanchez, which is worth a guaranteed $8.25 million for next season alone. The team’s quarterback woes don’t end there. Tannenbaum also had fingers pointed at him when the team made the mystifying decision to sign former Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow last off-season.

The team finished a disappointing 6-10 this season after a Sunday afternoon loss to the Buffalo Bills.
