Wearing the blue-and-black version of "the dress" that had everyone's attention on social media last week, Jax made it through to the Top 16 of Fox's American Idol Thursday night.

The East Brunswick 18-year-old put her own jazzy spin on the Motown classic "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" as fans in the audience iat Filmore Detroit made X's with their arms as she performed.

"You have such strong artistry. It's so original, the grit in your voice, nobody has got that. It's just you, it's your thing," said judge Keith Urban.

Jennifer Lopez acknowledged Jax as one of the competition's favorites but cautioned that her originality could backfire on her. "You don't want to take it so far that the song doesn't work," cautioned Lopez.

Harry Connick Jr. said he thought the song's arrangement was "dull" said told Jax she needs to reach higher at this critical stage of the show.

Host Ryan Seacrest and the judges had some fun with Jax about "the dress," debating the colors of the stripes, just as legions of social media users did last week.

As she came off the stage with several other contestants, Jax made a pitch for votes. "If you want to survive the zombie apocalypse, join the Jax pack," she said.

The results will be announced on Wednesday as the show moves to Los Angeles. The top 12 contestants will perform live on Thursday night.
