Strawberries are in season right now, asparagus is being harvested as well, and there is a lot more on the way. That’s according to New Jersey secretary of agriculture Douglas Fisher, who said despite the rough winter, crops in the Garden State have been virtually unaffected.

“The winter was not the problem,” Fisher said. “We got a late start in terms of planting because we had a cold spring and it took a while for the ground to warm up. But, we’re hearing from our farmers that if the weather stays on track now, we’re going to catch up quite nicely and you won’t notice that much of a gap from when you would normally expect these crops to be available.”

Hothouse tomatoes are currently being sold. Field-grown tomatoes will be available in a few weeks along with blueberries and corn, expected by the July 4th weekend.

“A lot of greens are in, lettuce and spinach are being harvested right now, arugula is coming in in fair quantity right now,” Fisher said. “What you normally expect to appear on the scene, you will be seeing.”
