A Jersey City police officer who had just completed his shift was seriously injured when he was struck by a car early Sunday.

City spokesman Stan Eason tells The Jersey Journal that Sgt. Michael Timmons suffered numerous injuries -- including a broken leg, broken ribs and a fractured pelvis -- when he was struck around 6 a.m. on Communipaw Avenue.

Timmons, who had just left the city's West District precinct building, underwent surgery and was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

No charges were filed against the driver, who remained on scene after the accident. Eason said the driver, whose name was not disclosed, apparently didn't see Timmons on the roadway.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
