A 34-year veteran of the Jersey City fire department was killed in a crash over the Memorial Day weekend.

Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill told the Jersey Journal Capt. Michael Suchdolski was killed when his pickup went off the road in West Milford on Sunday night and hit a tree. According to the New Jersey Herald, the 58-year-old from Franklin was the only person in the pickup, which went down an embankment along Clinton Road.

Suchdolski was awarded times many times over the course of his career but felt it was just "part of my job" according to his obituary. He was married to wife Nancy and had two children, son Michael and daughter Rachel.

Suchdolski's funeral is scheduled for Saturday at the F. John Ramsey Funeral Home in Franklin on Saturday at  10 a.m. His viewing is Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
