All the important Major League Baseball awards will be announced this Thursday.  I'm rooting for a local kid who's in the running.

He's called "The Millville Meteor".  The baseball world knows him as Mike Trout.

Does he play for one of our local teams?  Heck no, nowhere close.  He plays outfield for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

In 2012 the 22 year old won the American League Rookie of the Year honors.

For the 2013 season Trout is one of three players nominated for the American League's Most Valuable Player Award.  As most of you know, just to be nominated for MVP is a real big deal.

He's up against some tough competition.  The other two candidates are Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers, and the Oriole's Chris Davis.

This isn't just a New Jersey thing.

His parents, Debbie and Jeff raised Mike the right way.  Another positive influence for the Millville Senior High School alum was his childhood hero.  In little league Mike wore the number 2 on his uniform.  Yes, you guessed it.  Derek Jeter's number 2.

I've watched him play several times and have observed his TV interviews.  He plays the game the right way with hustle, and humility.  There's no "showboating" when Mike hits a home run or when he makes many of his terrific defensive plays.

Most important.  Off the field he's a gracious, hardworking, humble kid.

How could you not root for the guy?
