Not many 17-year-olds have military service at the top of their to-do lists, but Jax's brother Matt isn't your typical New Jersey teen.
Matt called us to share why he's joining the U.S. Marine Corps.
"I’ve always wanted to be in the military," said Matt. "I always knew this was my calling... I like the Marine corp because of their reputation, their code of conduct."
Matt was processed as a Reserve member two months ago, and will enter the service after he attends college.
The East Brunswick teenager credited his father's example as influential in his decision-making, calling his dad his hero. "Just seeing my dad hold a door for a lady or help some guy who broke down on the side of the road- just helping people... I grew up in the atmosphere, and helping people, I knew that was something I waned to do for the rest of my life.”He said that while his sister is scared, she's on his side. Matt's friends have also been extremely supportive from the state, pointing out that he's a Marine whenever they go out to eat.
“If I was allowed to, I would go tomorrow. I’m so ready," he said.
