James Volpe’s life was cut short as the passenger in a fatal 2011 car accident.

The James Volpe Foundation was founded shortly after the tragedy.

Since then, they’ve donated over $30,000 for a variety of community efforts, including local scholarships, holiday gifts, S.A.D.D, and Sandy relief.

“Through the foundation, we’ve been able to do a lot of good things, help a lot of people,” said Co-Chairperson Rob Meleo. “And it’s a great way to remember James.”

He said that the mission remains to support young members of the community reach their highest potential and to support families in their time of need. They have been trying to spread their contributions to as any many areas and communities as possible.

“We’re just trying to expand our reach, and as continue to raise funds, we’re able to do so,” Meleo said.

They host one of their two largest yearly events, the James Volpe Foundation 3rd Annual Golf Classic, on Monday, June 16, at Pine Barrens Golf Club in Jackson.

The outing features activities such as a Shoot Out Competition, Closest to the Pin Contest, awards, and a silent auction.

“It’s really been a highlight of the fundraising year. It’s been a lot of fun, it’s been well-received,” he said.

The moneys raised will go towards to the foundation’s ongoing initiatives.

“Three years later, he’s still remembered. People are still talking about him. It’s very touching for the family.”
