JACKSON — Are a couple's dogs being poisoned in Ocean County?

A Jackson couple claims their pair of beagle puppies were fed rat poison and had to have a blood transfusion, according to Jackson Police. Several years ago, dogs owned by the  couple died from poisoning, according to documents presented to police.

Mike Zappia and his wife Ann told 6 ABC Action News the dogs were poisoned a few days after police came to their home because someone complained about the dogs barking at 2 a.m. He blamed two cats in heat getting the attention of the beagles named Becky and Jimmy.

The dogs, who live in backyard pens with some  are recovering from their treatment according to the report.

The case was referred to the NJ SPCA for investigation. Spokesman Matt Stanton said the organization has just started its investigation into the incident.
