As we break out the beach chairs and fire up our barbecues, perhaps we should take a moment and give thought to the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

[/caption]After almost 200 years, I find it hard to believe that Memorial Day did not become a federal holiday until 1971.  Formerly called Decoration Day, this observance originated after the Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers.

Now, it's meaning hits much closer to home with no pun intended.  Through all of America's conflicts, up to and including today, we have family members or friends who made that ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

There are Memorial Day parades scheduled for today throughout New Jersey.  Here's a link to help you find a parade near you.

Have a safe and happy holiday!
