So now that we’re in the middle of 2014 with still a couple of years to go before another presidential election. Yet another recent poll suggests that Governor Christie leads the list of possible GOP presidential contenders.

Is Christie the best the GOP has to offer?

While he was the runaway leader for a while, presumably because of his leadership skills during and after Hurricane Sandy, his image took a beating in the wake of the Bridgegate scandal – giving credence to the assumption that he’s not exactly presidential timber.

However, since polls are usually snapshots of where a presumptive candidate is at any given time, the latest, which was done by pollsters at CNN, say that he tops the list of the other candidates.

Not by much, but still tops the list nonetheless.

Is he the best hope for the GOP to take back the White House, or do you feel there’s a better candidate lurking about?

Thirteen percent of GOP and independents who lean Republican said they would likely back Christie in 2016.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee each received 12 percent, while Gov. Rick Perry of Texas and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin each garnered 11 percent. . .

However, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would beat Romney by double digits if he decides to mount a third presidential run.

And one would have to assume that were Christie to run, the Democrats would have a field day in an effort to defeat him.

Plus there’s the Clinton “magic” factor to deal with.

I’m thinking the electorate would be assuming there'd be a return to the halcyon days of the 90s when the economy was booming due to the expansion of the tech industry. (Which is clearly a pipe dream!)

And given the state of the economy here, plus the looming pension reforms the Governor is pushing – which his former companion and now adversary in Senate President Steve Sweeney now say are “dead in the water, ” it’s all gonna be a tough mountain for the Governor to climb.

Republicans would need to take a good hard look at whether or not he's the guy who'd be the standard bearer going into 2016.

Is there a better Republican contender for President than Chris Christie?
