Tejeda had been an inmate at East Jersey State Prison in Woodbridge since October 2007.

He was sentenced to 40 years in state prison -- 34 without being eligible for parole -- after pleading guilty to the 2004 slaying of his wife and her lover. He admitted to finding them naked in the bedroom of his Fairview home, making them kneel, facing each other, then fatally shooting both.

Last year, an appeals court agreed with a lower-court judge who ruled against Tejeda's request to have his sentence reduced.

Officials didn't disclose the circumstances in which he died. An autopsy will be conducted.
