The Record newspaper reports Diandra Barreto and Michael Gallinella were riding a rented scooter that crashed March 25. The 24-year-old Barreto had a dislocated leg, several spine fractures and a lacerated liver, while the 36-year-old Gallinella had broken ribs, a punctured lung and a possible neck injury.

But both were stuck in the Bahamas for nearly a week because hospitals there and in Miami reportedly refused to treat the uninsured couple. But local businesses, family and friends raised funds to have them flown home, and Rep. William Pascrell's office helped arrange a $9,100 federal emergency loan.

The couple remained at Hackensack University Medical Center and could not be reached for comment Sunday.
