The work under an overpass just past exit #2 (Route 27) blocks the right lane. Delays began early for Thursday's morning commute with traffic backed up onto the Route 440 section of the highway at the Garden State Parkway and continued into the midday.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation explains that a scheduled inspection found the outer W-Beam of the overpass weakened due to exposure. Crews are currently evaluating the problem and will then establish a timetable for repairs which could also affect NJ Transit and Amtrak service as it passes under the highway.

New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams says while drivers are frustrated by the extra delays they should be thankful for the regular bridge inspections to catch problems early. "Once the integrity of a structure is compromised the slightest problem could trigger a catastrophe," says Williams as he recalled the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in 2007.
