Human Remains Found Off Route 46 In Roxbury
Investigators continue to be tight lipped about human remains found off Route 46 in Roxbury.
Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp and Roxbury Police Chief James Simonetti today would only say that their investigation is "ongoing" and that ."several promising leads" are being followed.
The remains were discovered in a wooded area on Route 46 at Hercules Road on Wednesday afternoon.
Police are focusing on ownership of the land according to NJ.com, which reports the land was once owned by a company called Hercules, Inc. with has merged with Ashland, Inc.
A large factory once sat on several acres of land. There were several small houses where employees once lived near the Route 46 entrance and the large white house.
The property was the scene of an explosion that killed 51 in 1940 at a munitions plant when 297,000 pounds of gunpowder blew up according to NJ.com. There were also explosions in 1967, 1989 and 1994.
