The federal government has awarded a total of $57 million in grants to public housing authorities across New Jersey to make major improvements.The Newark Housing Authority is getting the biggest chunk of money, more than $14 million, followed by Jersey City with a grant of more than $4.5 million.

Housing agencies in Elizabeth, Paterson, Trenton and Camden are all getting at least $2 million each.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the grants Thursday.

HUD awards capital grants each year to the more than 3,100 public housing agencies across the country. It uses a formula that considers the number, type and age of the units.
