The unofficial start of  the summer season starts this weekend with Memorial Day and the shore has been gearing up for months now in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. Many of the beaches and boardwalks will be new and you may be paying more to use the beach.  But nonetheless, you will be able to go down the shore this summer, much like you have in the past. So are you planning on going?

As the summer approaches, realtors say the Jersey Shore may see more families taking day trips to the beach than renting for an extended period of time.

The number of people who have booked a place to stay for a week or more is down by about 20 percent. “People are slower to make reservations this year than last year,” said Tom Wissel, MLS coordinator for the Ocean County Board of Realtors.

But Wissel said the rental market is also very hyper-local. “When you look at Seaside Park, Seaside Heights, Lavallette, everything is fine. But Ortley is in bad shape," he said.

So how will you be using the Jersey shore this summer? Rent for a week or so. Or just take day trips, or not go at all?
