How Ugly Will the Gay Marriage Debate Get?

I already wrote about why I think a referendum on a civil rights issue is a terrible idea. Now Governor Christie and Assemblyman Reed Gusciora are already diving headfirst into a swamp over the issue.

Gusciora, who’s right in not wanting a civil rights issued to be voted on by the majority was wrong to compare the Governor to infamous segregationists.  Governor Christie meanwhile is just as wrong for calling Gusciora, an openly gay lawmaker, “numbnuts”.

Yes, that’s where we are already on this issue. Name calling. Imagine how much uglier this will all get if it DOES go to a referendum. Imagine the money spent. When California’s prop 8 came about it was the largest expenditure of money on a social policy initiative.

Lord knows what the record for name calling would end up looking like.
