New Jersey residents are trying to beat the heat as temperatures soar into the high 90s.

Forecasters say the combination of excessive heat and humidity could send the heat index soaring to 104 degrees on Wednesday afternoon.

So they're urging residents to drink lots of water and stay indoors in air-conditioned areas if possible The high temperatures spurred Howell school officials to make Wednesday the last day of the school year instead of Thursday.

And people attending Wall High School's graduation ceremony Wednesday night will be able to watch a remote broadcast inside the air-conditioned building.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for counties along the Delaware River and heat advisories for other areas.

Forecasters say relief will arrive Friday into Saturday.
