NEW YORK — Amtrak said Friday its eight week infrastructure renewal project at New York Penn Station came in within budget.

During a weekly press conference updating the project, Amtrak Chief Engineer Gery Williams said the cost of the project was "very close to $30 million." It was the first time a specific dollar amount had been attached to the work that is scheduled to be completed over Labor Day weekend.

Normal service for NJ Transit as well as LIRR and Amtrak itself will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

"There are many lessons learned from the whole experience. We've taken away quite a few best practices," Williams said.

Williams said the weekend work will resume at Penn Station at the end of September that Williams said will last "well into next year."

NJ Transit riders will return to a regular schedule on Sept. 5 and suggested customers review the newly updated schedules.

Morris & Essex Line rider Michael Kasdan, whose concerns about the summer schedule were eased by flex hours and a mostly smooth commute, asked rhetorically, "Would it be wrong to say I'm going to miss the express bus and the ferry?"

Cross honoring with NJ Transit bus, light rail PATH and NY Waterway will end on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 3 a.m. NY Waterway's 39th Street service will continue but riders will have to buy another ticket.
