There's always a survey from some publication about the best places to live in the United States, and usually there are a few New Jersey towns on the list.

They'll rate the school system, the number of college grads, the crime rate, the proximity to cultural attractions.

Pah-leeze! How many pizza places you got?

Huh? How many? They any good? To me a town's "livability" is proportionate to how many good pizza places they have.

My son and his wife were in town this past weekend from Charlotte, North Carolina. They've been there about 8 months. They like it, BUT their biggest complaint? The same thing you hear from every NJ ex-pat...there's no good pizza down there!

Saturday night they went out to a local watering hole to meet up with friends. I texted them..."don't eat at the bar and don't stop for anything on the way home. I've got something for you on top of the oven." Yeah, I made them a pizza!

When I asked him in the morning if he liked it, he said "I think there's one slice left". I couldn't resist. The poor kid. No good pizza for eight months. It ain't right, I tell ya!

We asked our listeners last week how many pizza joints were in their town. Toms River seemed to have the most with over 40. Brick was a top contender in the 20's. And Long Branch seemed to be doing pretty well in the teens.

There are two pizza parlors 8/10ths of a mile to the right of my house, one 6/10ths of a mile to the left and another 8/10ths of a mile past that. And I don't live in a real pizza rich area.

So if you ever decide to move out of New Jersey, those pizza places you take for granted within walking distance of your front door, will haunt you in your dreams.

From the first chain pizza you try to the last poor local attempt at pizza you'll find outside of the northeast, you'll be sure to doubt your decision to ever leave our wonderful state of New Jersey.
