The story below was originally written in June, when lawmakers including Gov. Chris Christie announced a deal to raise New Jersey's gas tax by 23 cents per gallon, in exchange for an eventual 1 percent drop in the state's sales tax.

Friday, Sept. 30, Christie announced a new deal — with the same gas tax hike, but a smaller break in the sales tax.

Come Thursday, New Jersey residents will be facing down a massive, immediate increase in their existing 14.5 cent-per gallon gas tax — or they won't.

Late Monday night (really, early Thursday morning), the state Assembly struck a Gov. Chris Christie-backed deal to hike the gas tax by 23 cents per gallon — in exchange for eventually dropping the state sales tax by a cent. The state Senate will vote Thursday, and the tax would go into effect on Friday.

It's a deal Christie argues finally meets longstanding requirement of tax fairness — but one met with skepticism by several commuters.

Feedback New Jersey 101.5 has received via social media has been overwhelmingly negative.

"This is a total bait and switch screw job," Jacqueline Wells Lubinski wrote on New Jersey 101.5's Facebook page. "If anyone thinks that ALL that collected money will go JUST TOWARD bridges and roads they live in Looneyville!"

“Well of course they’re not (happy). They don’t want to pay more. I understand that,” Christie said at a public appearance Wednesday. “But that’s why it’s so important to give them a sales tax cut at the same time.”

The gas tax increase has been roundly condemned by New Jersey 101.5 hosts. Jeff Deminski has argued New Jersey needs to massively rethink how it pays for the road repairs the gas tax is meant to fund. Steve Trevelise asks: "When you look at how much prices are going to rise after businesses factor in the delivery costs thanks to this new gas tax, you have to wonder where, if at all, are we really saving money."

But perhaps the most vocal opponent among the New Jersey 101.5 on-air staff has been morning show host Bill Spadea, who's dedicated most of his show for the last several days to the topic — urging audience members to call legislators and stop the tax before it becomes law.

New Jersey 101.5 audience members flooded Assembly Members' phone lines Monday before that chamber voted — though it wasn't enough to prevent a 53-23 vote in favor.

With the Senate vote coming up, Spadea's not giving up:
