Hoboken Moves to Reduce Flood Risk

Hoboken is applying for a $9 million low-interest loan to install a pump that will alleviate flooding.

Parts of the northern New Jersey city flood every time there’s a drenching rain. Some areas are still below the height of the Hudson River at high tide, which can be enough to spill water into the streets.

Much of Hoboken also was under water after Superstorm Sandy.

Hoboken installed a pump four years ago, and Mayor Dawn Zimmer says the part of the city it services has stayed dry with the exception of Sandy.

The North Hudson Sewerage Authority will install the new pump.

Hoboken has also brokered a deal with United Water that will create a master plan for its water infrastructure. The city has been plagued by water main breaks.
