Residents of Hoboken may have to wait until at least Thanksgiving for water service to be fully restored following a major water main break that flooded streets Sunday.

The city issued a statement Monday stating that another 36-inch valve failed while crews were working to repair the initial main break.

"After working to isolate a water main break on a transmission line in southwest Hoboken on Sunday that led to widespread water pressure loss throughout the city, an additional 36 inch valve failed last night and disrupted a transmission main which feeds water from Jersey City into Hoboken," the city said in a statement on its website.

As a result of the break, residents of the area are still being told to boil water before using it for consumption. In addition, officials are urging users to conserve water to lessen the demand on the system.

"Until the Jersey City valve can be repaired, water at the site of the break will continue to flow from underground. After repairing the valve in Jersey City, only then will Suez Water (formerly known as United Water) be able to conduct an assessment and make repairs in Hoboken," the city said on its website. "Delays for full restoration could potentially last through Thanksgiving.  We will provide an update tomorrow regarding timing as we know more about the repairs."

The city is providing water trucks with clean drinking water for those impacted by the water main break. The trucks are located at 333 River St., the intersection of Newark Street and Adams Street, Hoboken High School (900 Clinton St.), Fox Hill Gardens (311 13th St.), and 14th Street and Sinatra Drive.
