PARAMUS — Police are searching for the driver of a Honda that sped off after hitting a Public Works employee Friday morning.

Police say the 30-year-old worker was collecting garbage from the curb on Forest Avenue when a car driving south in the right lane hit the man, who saw the car coming and tried to jump into the truck in order to avoid getting hurt.

Police say the garbage truck was lit with warning lights.

The hit-and-run happened about 6:50 a.m., nearly an hour after sunrise, near the entrance to Van Saun County Park. The victim was hospitalized with a broken ankle and foot.

The Honda was described as an early 2000s model in gray or silver color.

Police ask anyone with information to call 201-262-3400 ext. 1110 or submit tips online.
