Heroin Sweep Nets Drugs, Cash, Guns [AUDIO]

A two-month sweep by about 50 law enforcement agencies in Northern New Jersey has resulted in the arrest of 325 users and dealers, and the seizure of $350,000 to $400,000 worth of heroin, 37 guns and $25,000 in cash.

According to Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli, the vast majority of users were 20-somethings from the suburbs who had been robbed while trying to buy drugs.

“It now appears to be an alarming and increasing incident where they drive into Paterson,” he said. “they’re looking to satisfy their heroin addiction and they’re being met with a gun.

Molinelli said these young people were targeted because “they’re suburban, they’re addicted, they’ll do anything for it, they show up with money and then they have a gun pointed at them and they’re not going to go to their local police department.”

Molinelli also said this is not a Paterson issue, it’s not a North Jersey issue, it’s an issue that exists statewide.

He said to try to help the arrested individuals break their habit, instead of having them go through the normal six-month rehab, “they’re actually going to be placed in a 2 year program   and they’ll have to go through a recovery. Part of this isn’t just to arrest them, it’s also to begin to help them on the road to recovery.”
