Is this a sign that political correctness run amok or what?

The Rutgers University student assembly recently passed a bill to diversify the school's Scarlet Knight mascot.

Apparently Rutgers would like Scarlet Knights to come in all colors and genders. Is this the tab taxpayers should be picking up? From what history tells me, back in the days when Knights existed, they were white. I really don’t think there was racism intended by depicting the Rutgers knight as a white male. If you want a more diverse mascot, then you need to drop the Knight concept completely because if you make the character diverse, it’s going to look ridiculous.

Who among us has ever seen a third gender Knight?

The closest they ever came was “Mel Brooks History of The World Part 1.” I’m sure the football team is going to enjoy the ridicule from the opposition as they get cheered on by that mascot!

If we do go the route of diversity, how many Knights will we have? Will there be an Italian Knight? Indian? Muslim? How about a Hasidic? How could you not have an Arabian Knight?  Maybe instead of opening games with the “Star Spangled Banner,” Rutgers could open all events with the singing of “It’s a Small World?

Imagine the dilemma if they did this at Notre Dame? Imagine trying to find an African American, Latino Fighting Irishman who, just happens to be transsexual? That would definitely explain the “fighting” part.

Maybe it's more important that the Rutgers students learn that not everything has to be diverse and that it’s ok to have one mascot. If that offends you or makes you feel left out, then you can always transfer. We’ll make sure to wish you “Good Knight” on your way out the door.
