FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP (Gloucester) — When a reportedly intoxicated driver crossed into oncoming traffic, the impact of the head-on crash took the life of 67-year-old Joseph Sauro, of Millville, who was getting a ride home in a medical transport.

Shawn Huntsinger, 45, of the Franklinville section of this township, was driving a 2003 Mercury Marquis north on Fries Mill Road near Blackwood Avenue on Tuesday afternoon when he struck a 2015 Nissan Quest being driven by Joseph R. Maressa, 26, of Voorhees, who was driving south.

Police determined that Huntsinger was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He was charged with vehicular homicide and two counts of assault by auto.

Sauro was taken to Cooper Medical Center in Camden where he was pronounced dead. Maressa was also taken to Cooper Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Huntsinger was also taken to Cooper, while James H. Runyon, 54, a passenger in his vehicle, was taken to Elmer Hospital for care.
