Have you ever heard of ‘swollen lug nuts?’

I took my car in to get the oil changed and tires rotated and the mechanic called me over to tell me that while they could rotate my tires, he wasn’t sure that he would be able to get the tires back on because my lug nuts were swollen.

In all my years of driving cars, I have never heard the term “swollen lug nuts.” He told me he could replace them all for $9 a piece. There are 20 lug nuts, so $180 for something I’ve never heard of. The car itself is only about 18 months old, so i was a little skeptical, smelling scam.

I told him i would pass on the new lug nuts and they were able to successfully rotate the tires and put them back on. I guess I’ll just take my chances with the lug nuts I have, but I’m wondering if anyone else has ever heard of swollen lug nuts?
